What is SPF and why is it so important for your skin?

Today it's all about an essential part of your skin care routine: sun protection factor (SPF). You've probably seen this term often on sunscreens and other skin care products, but do you know what exactly it means and why it's so important? Let's clarify these questions and share some tips on how to effectively protect your skin.

What is the sun protection factor?

The sun protection factor, or SPF for short, indicates how well a sun protection product protects the skin from UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and can damage the DNA in skin cells, which in the long term can lead to skin cancer. A higher SPF means you can stay in the sun longer without getting sunburned.

For example: If you normally get sunburned after 10 minutes of unprotected exposure to the sun, using a sunscreen with SPF 30 will theoretically allow you to spend 300 minutes (30 x 10 minutes) in the sun before risking sunburn.

Why is sun protection factor so important for the skin?

The main function of SPF is to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. In addition to preventing sunburn, good UV protection also protects against premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and pigment spots. UV radiation is one of the main causes of visible signs of aging on the skin.

Regular use of sunscreen can significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen should therefore be an integral part of your daily routine, not just in summer but all year round.

Should you always use sun protection factor or only in summer?

Many people think that sun protection is only important in summer or on vacation. However, UV radiation is present all year round, even on cloudy days. That's why it's important that you protect your skin even in autumn and winter, as well as on rainy days. Especially if you are at higher altitudes or there is snow that reflects the rays, good sun protection should not be missing.

Which products with sun protection factor should you use?

For daily use, we recommend a moisturizing day cream with at least SPF 30. Make sure the product is “broad-spectrum,” meaning it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are primarily responsible for signs of aging and can also contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

If you're planning a day at the beach or outdoors, choose a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. Apply generously and reapply every two hours and after swimming or heavy sweating. Incorporate sun protection into your daily routine to keep your skin healthy and young. Stay protected and enjoy the sun responsibly!
